We Can Be Superheroes

There is something appealing and delightful in the idea of a superhero.  Someone who can fight evil, that has super powers, and that can protect and save the innocent.  Superheroes that exist in comic books and movies have usually overcome many obstacles, such as death of a loved one, abuse, illness, poverty, etc.  Somehow they manage to rise above all odds to become something extraordinary.

Superheroes do exist and are called Transitional Characters.  They are those who have overcome hardship, abuse, neglect, and hate.  They use the power of choice to live their life differently than the way they experienced it as a child.  They break patterns and expectations to save generations of their posterity from the harmful consequences that only abuse can create.
Not only do Transitional Characters influence the futures of their posterity, but they can also influence ours.  We can learn from their example to overcome our own shortcomings or faults.  Although we may not have experienced abuse or other hardships inflicted upon us by a parent, we can make choices to be the best mother or father we can be.  We can set goals to withstand the trends created by our parents, which may be harmful or less adaptive.  Everyone has the power of choice and this can be used to enrich, uplift, and strengthen our families.
